“Hate comes at you when you make any stand. It’s the price of trying to be heard. If that’s the case, and we accept it, then it’s a waste of emotion to react to the negativity. The hate, the rage that people throw at you only has power if you let it affect you. I know that’s easier said than done, but I want to enjoy every single day and feel great about the power of this struggle that we’re building.” -Michael Bennett

“Anywhere you go, there’s a black person kicking a**. The thing about it is you can’t wait until there’s already a black person kicking a** somewhere before you decide to go there and kick some yourself. Doesn’t have to be like basketball, where you know a hundred other black guys are trying to do it, so you figure it’s okay for you to do it. Sometimes you’ve got to be the first. Shirley Chisholm didn’t see any black women running for president before she decided to do it. The way she told it was “Somebody had to do it first.” So, the next time you think about doing something, and you hear somebody say, ‘Aw, man, black people don’t do stuff like that,’ think about Shirley Chisholm. And think about Mae Jemison.” -Dick Gregory

“I have found that one of the commonest causes of unhappiness among my patients is that they are attempting to live their lives on the deferred payment plan. They do not live, nor enjoy life now, but wait for some future event or occurrence. They will be happy when they get married, when they get a better job, when they get the house paid for, when they get the children through college, when they have completed some task or won some victory. Invariably, they are disappointed. Happiness is a mental habit, a mental attitude, and if it is not learned and practiced in the present it is never experienced. It cannot be made contingent upon solving some external problem. When one problem is solved another appears to take its place. Life is a series of problems. If you are to be happy at all, you must be happy- period! not happy ‘because of.’” -Maxwell Maltz
